Fiber optic is a coated glass wire that uses light as a transmission medium. It offers multiple uses in telecommunications like copper, but with a greater capacity.
To support high-demand data transmission as well as a great quantity of interconnected users, fiber optic is required. It is an excellent way of information transmission due to its features: greater bandwidth, lower signal attenuation -which allows to cover greater distances with no repeaters-, integrity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, high security, and long-lasting components.
Single mode fiber optic
Its main advantages are a virtually unlimited bandwidth and low attenuation level.
Therefor it is used to long distance applications (WAN environments).
Single mode fiber optic, due to its core reduced diameter (8,3 to 10 microns) only possess one light propagation mode, this way transmission runs parallel to the fiber’s axis.
Multimode fiber optic
A multimode fiber optic is that one in which light beams can circulate through more than one way or mode, making them arrive at different times and not all at one. A multimode fiber optic can hold more than a thousand modes of light propagation. These are used in short distance applications (less than 2 km).
Multimode fiber optic is an easier way to connect and has a greater tolerance towards less precise components due to its bigger core. Regarding the core’s type of refraction index, there are two kinds of multimode fiber optic:
- Stairway index: this kind of fiber optic has a constant refraction index in all its cylindrical section, this translates into high modal dispersion.
- Gradual index: the refraction index is not constant, therefore has a lower modal dispersion. Its core is formed by different materials.
